5C COLLETS OVERVIEW

5C collets, also known as 385E collets, are a popular alternative to standard 3-jaw chucks for holding cylindrical workpieces up to 1-1/8” or 28mm, and bar stock up to 1” or 25mm in diameter. Collets are easy to change out, allowing faster set-up times, and they provide 360-degree support for the workpiece for higher accuracy. These collets provide a much stronger grip and superior concentricity than a standard 3-jaw chuck.

Collet Selection Guidelines:

  • Collets are available individually or in kits
  • Collet series is determined by the internal surface and shape (smooth or serrated round, square, hexagonal, etc.)
  • Collet bore diameter is determined by the workpiece diameter

Round 5C Collets:

  • Can be used to hold any type of round or odd-shaped material
  • Strong grip of material for a variety of machining applications
  • Provide 360-degree support for the workpiece
  • High accuracy and concentricity
  • Repeatable and easy to use

5C Round Collet Clamping Range (Inch):

  • 1/16" to 1-1/8" in 1/64" increments

5C Round Collet Clamping Range (Metric):

  • 3mm to 28mm in 0.5mm increments

5C Collets

When precision and repeatability matter in turning and machining setups, a 5C collet brings dependable workholding to the table. Whether you are securing round stock for lathe work or positioning parts for secondary machining operations, this classic collet system delivers strong grip and excellent concentricity.

Haas Tooling’s range of 5C collets gives machinists quick changeability and high accuracy while minimizing setup time and complexity. With broad size coverage and proven performance, 5C collets help you hold parts securely and confidently on every job.

5C Collets as an Essential Tool

5C collets are a widely used standard in metalworking for clamping cylindrical workpieces with uniform radial pressure, providing 360-degree support and improved precision compared to traditional 3-jaw chucks. They are ideal for jobs where concentricity and repeatability are critical, such as precision turning, grinding setups, and secondary machining operations. These collets are easy to install and change, offering faster setups and more consistent results across batches of parts. They are especially valuable when you need repeatable results without sacrificing accuracy.

The grip range of A 5C round collet typically covers diameters from about 1/16 of an inch up to 1-1/8 of an inch, making them versatile enough for a wide variety of workpiece sizes. They are manufactured with smooth or serrated internal surfaces to match the type of workpiece and desired grip.

Picking the Right Collet and Holder

Choosing the correct 5C collet doesn’t stop at size. You also need the right 5C collet holder or fixture to work with your machine spindle or setup. It ensures the collet seats properly and draws in securely, maintaining grip without slipping during cutting operations.

Collets are designed to clamp more securely and with less distortion of the workpiece than many other holding methods. That precision is critical when part quality must meet tight tolerances. Haas Tooling’s 5C options include a variety of bore sizes for smooth round collets to match different job requirements and material sizes.

Why 5C Collets Work in Modern Shops

Today’s machining environments demand tools that help you cut faster, inspect more accurately, and set up jobs with confidence. 5C collets support this by combining strong, reliable clamping with ease of use. They provide concentric clamping that can reduce vibration and improve surface finish, which is a must for high-quality machining. And because they’re standardized, they’re compatible and versatile across setups.
