Product Overview

Driven (Live) Toolholders

Haas live tooling options boost productivity by allowing secondary operations – such as milling, drilling, flatting, and tapping – to be performed in a single setup, on one machine. Two types of driven (live) toolholders are used on Haas machines, depending on the machine series* and turret type: BMT45/65/75 or VDI40. Both axial and radial toolholders are available.

NOTE: Review the Duty Cycle Charts for peak performance.

*Older Haas turning centers, and some models sold in other regions, may be equipped with VDI or VB turrets, rather than BMT65.

BMT45/65/75

  • Industry-standard base-mount bolt pattern
  • Black oxide coating for corrosion resistance
  • Coolant delivery hardware included
  • Includes manufacturer’s warranty

VDI

  • Fits Haas VDI and VB (hybrid) turrets
  • Industry-standard 40 mm VDI mount
  • Black oxide coating for corrosion resistance
  • Includes manufacturer’s warranty

Eppinger Preci-Flex® Live Tool Holder and Adapter Coolant Compatability

TSC holders are through-tool coolant capable when used with TSC-capable adapters. They can be modified for external coolant supply to accept Non-TSC adapters.

Non-TSC holders are external coolant only, They will accept both TSC and Non-TSC

BMT45/65 & VDI40 Live Tool Duty Cycles

The maximum rpm is 6,000 rpm for 2 minutes and then an 8-minute cool down.

You can run a reduced rpm at 4,000 rpm at no time limit

*Parameters apply to BMT45, BMT65 and VDI40 ER32 holders

For longer periods, here are some direct contributing factors to the heat cycle:

  • Material hardness
  • Material machinability
  • Coolant on vs. coolant off
  • Coolant condition- lean or rich or dirty
  • Chip load (SFM, DOC, and stepover)
  • Cutting tool coating and recommended run parameters (cutting tool technologies)

Many times, longer cycles on a turning center are for 3D contouring or engraving. In these cases, we recommend high-speed live tool holders. This will also take the stress off the components linked to the mill drive kinematics of the machine tool if they stay under max limits.

Customers can also split the operation over more than one live tool if they have available stations on the turret. They can also check the temp of the holder during the first few parts to make sure the temp is stabilized. The max operating temp is 140º Fahrenheit.
