Spot Drills (General Purpose):

 

Spot drills are used primarily to create a starting hole for a traditional drill bit, ensuring an accurate hole location for a secondary drilling operation. The shallow hole created by the spot drill prevents the traditional drill bit from “walking” or moving. The short flute length of these spot drills versus their overall length increases rigidity and strength, and reduces drill wander. These spot drills can also be used for chamfering, deburring, and countersinking. However, they do not have body clearance, and are not designed to drill beyond the point length.

 

Haas Cobalt steel (HSSCO8) long spot drills are harder than standard high-speed steel (HSS), and provide better wear resistance and higher hardness. They feature a bright, uncoated finish, and are suitable for spotting a wide variety of materials. 

 

Haas Solid Carbide spot drills have a shorter overall length than our cobalt spot drills, and can be used at higher speeds and feeds. They are suitable for spotting a wide variety of materials, including high-temperature alloys.

 

CAUTION: Not recommended as spotting tools for carbide twist drills. Using a spot drill with a point angle sharper than the point angle of the drill can damage the carbide drill.
